D’Uva, following a public notice from the Ministry of Culture, has implemented a project for the removal of physical, cognitive and sensory barriers in the Museum of the Treasure of San Gennaro, financed with resources from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) by the European Union – NextGenerationEU.

GENERAL PROJECT OBJECTIVES

  • Removal of physical barriers: improve the Museum’s accessibility through architectural interventions and the installation of specific furnishings and equipment.
  • Removal of cognitive and sensory barriers: implement innovative digital technologies and new signage, making the visit engaging and memorable for everyone, including people with visual and hearing disabilities.
  • Safety and emergency measures: rethink safety measures to ensure an inclusive environment attentive to accessibility, without compromising the protection of artistic heritage.
  • PNRR Objectives: within the framework of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, contribute to the realization of physical interventions planned in Italian museums by Measure M1C3-3, respecting the principles of not causing significant harm to environmental objectives and contributing to climate and digital goals.
INTERVENTIONS CARRIED OUT IN THE MUSEUM OF THE TREASURE OF SAN GENNARO
  • Video guides in Italian Sign Language (LIS): allow deaf visitors to access information on artworks completely independently.
  • Audio descriptions: texts specifically designed to facilitate visits for visually impaired and blind people.
  • Multilingual audio guide: “A Treasure of an audio guide” enriched with 6 new languages (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Ukrainian, Russian, and Portuguese), in addition to those already available (Italian, English, French, Spanish, German, and Neapolitan).
  • Audio guide for children: a special narration that allows children to explore and learn about the history of San Gennaro and one of the most precious treasures in the world.
  • Inclusive website: optimization of the Museum’s website to meet the needs of people with disabilities.
  • 3D reproductions: reproduction of San Gennaro’s jeweled miter at a 1:1 scale.
  • Tactile touchstone panels: for recognizing the shapes of San Gennaro’s necklace and other gifts dedicated to the Patron Saint.
  • Braille panels: with descriptions of the Museum rooms.
  • Nero-Braille brochure: explanatory for the Chapel and Sacristies.
  • Orientation ceramic floor plans: to facilitate visits within the Museum.
  • LETIsmart beacons: small sound devices designed to facilitate navigation within the Museum.
  • Museum staff: trained on visitor reception, as well as on accessibility and inclusion topics.
  • Architectural interventions: iron handrails, stairlift for access to the Museum and restrooms, benches along the route, ramps to facilitate entry, and reconfigured ticket counters for better reception.
  • Inclusive signage: adapted for accessibility and integrated into the emergency plan.

IMPLEMENTATION PERIOD Interventions in the Museum of the Treasure of San Gennaro began in January 2022 and concluded on 30/06/2023.

The Project described is funded through the Public Notice for the submission of project proposals for interventions for the removal of physical, cognitive, and sensory barriers in private museums and cultural sites, to be financed under the PNRR, Mission 1 “Digitalization, innovation, competitiveness, and culture,” Component “Culture 4.0” (M1C3), Measure 1 “Cultural heritage for the next generation,” Investment 1.2 “Removal of physical and cognitive barriers in museums, libraries, and archives to allow wider access and participation in culture,” funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU and managed by the Ministry of Culture.
