The precious paintings by Luca Giordano, among the jewels of the Museum of the Treasury of San Gennaro preserved in the sacristy of the chapel, are shining once again. From June 7, the exhibition “Luca Giordano. The restoration of the copper plates for the Nova Sacristia” curated by Laura Giusti, scientific curator of the Museum, will open. The exhibition is the result of the restoration of the four masterpieces that the Neapolitan painter created for the Deputation in 1668: the Madonna della Purità, Saint Joseph, Saint Anne, and Saint Joachim.

The intervention, financed by the Deputation of the Royal Chapel of the Treasury of San Gennaro, was carried out by Lithos s.r.l., under the high supervision of the Superintendence of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape for the Municipality of Naples. The exhibition, conceived by Luciana De Maria, head of the Culture sector of the Chapel of San Gennaro, will allow visitors to see the works up close, temporarily displayed at eye level before being reinstalled at the top of the wooden cabinets.

The initiative is the second proposal of the project dedicated to “Miniature Exhibitions”, which began in September 2022 with the exhibition “Unseen Treasures”, stemming from the desire of the Deputation and the Museum of the Treasury of San Gennaro, directed by Francesca Ummarino with the scientific curatorship of Laura Giusti and the management of D’Uva, to periodically delve into a specific study and research focus on the heritage of the Treasury.

The restoration of Luca Giordano’s copper plates brought to light the original, bright and dazzling colors of the paintings’ surfaces and, for the first time, provided an opportunity to examine the works up close, yielding valuable information on the mounting techniques and execution of the copper plates, adding another important piece to the understanding of one of the most renowned painters of the second half of the 17th century.
